M.A. and J.D./M.A. in Applied Ethics & Policy

Program Description

The Duke Master of Arts in Applied Ethics & Policy (AEP) Program meets the growing demand for professionals who can thoughtfully address the ethical challenges of science, technology, law, and public policy. The program prepares the next generation of leaders to think critically, act strategically, and create meaningful impact.

The AEP Program examines how advances in science and technology affect people and society. Students explore topics such as the use of AI in healthcare, genetic testing, brain-computer interfaces, AI in the arts, and autonomous weapons.

The program is designed to be completed in 12 months. Students also have the option to continue their studies at Duke for an additional semester at virtually no additional tuition cost. The AEP Program offers two concentrations—Bioethics & Science Policy and Technology Ethics & Innovation Policy—along with a wide range of elective courses from across Duke University.

The Bioethics & Science Policy concentration provides an interdisciplinary foundation in ethics, law, medicine, public health, and policy. It prepares graduates to address the complex ethical questions created by advances in healthcare, biotechnology, and scientific research. Career opportunities include roles in hospitals, academic institutions, government agencies, research organizations, biotech companies, and other organizations in roles such as clinical ethicist, policy analyst, compliance officer, and healthcare administrator. The curriculum combines rigorous academics with practical experience, equipping graduates to navigate ethical challenges, shape science policy, and help ensure that medicine, research, and innovation serve the public good.

The Technology Ethics & Innovation Policy concentration prepares students to shape the future by ensuring that innovation is ethical, responsible, and benefits society. The curriculum combines technical knowledge with ethical reasoning, public policy, and strategic decision-making. Students learn to evaluate the societal impacts of emerging technologies while developing practical approaches to real-world challenges. This interdisciplinary, practice-focused program emphasizes the critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills needed to influence decision-making at the highest levels. Graduates are prepared to help ensure that technological and scientific progress advances human well-being, equity, and public trust.

All applications received by January 21, 2027 will receive a final decision by February 28, 2027.  Applications received by March 18, 2027 are guaranteed review. After March 18, 2027, applications will be accepted on a space-available basis through May 31, 2027.

• GRE Scores: Optional for Spring and Fall enrollment. MCAT scores may be submitted instead of GRE Scores, if desired.
• English Language Exam: TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test required* for applicants whose first language is not English
  *test waiver may apply for some applicants
• GPA: Undergraduate GPA calculated on 4.0 scale required

Applicants to the Applied Ethics & Policy program must complete supplemental application questions. Please answer the following questions and upload your responses in the Departmental Supplemental Uploads section of your application:

Required Essay #1 (Maximum 1,200 Words)
Choose a current issue or challenge related to bioethics, technology ethics, and/or public policy that you find important.
In your essay, describe the issue, explain why it matters, and discuss the ethical questions or policy challenges it raises. Share your perspective on how the issue should be addressed and explain the reasoning behind your views. You may draw on your academic, professional, volunteer, or personal experiences, as well as examples or evidence that have informed your thinking.

We are interested in learning how you approach complex issues, consider different perspectives, and communicate your ideas clearly. There is no single "right" answer. Instead, we are looking for a thoughtful, well-reasoned response that reflects your interest in applied ethics and public policy.

Required Essay #2 (Maximum 600 Words)
Describe your career goals and explain how earning a Master of Applied Ethics and Policy will help you achieve them.
In your essay, discuss your professional interests, the experiences that have shaped your goals, and the knowledge and skills you hope to gain through the program. Explain why this degree is the right next step for you and how you plan to apply what you learn to make a meaningful impact in your field or community.
