Teaching at Durham Tech: Adjunct Opportunities for Duke Ph.D. Students and Postdocs
Durham Technical Community College has a long history of hiring Duke Ph.D. students and postdocs as adjunct instructors, typically to teach a single course in a given term. In this session, deans Chris Mansfield (Science and Math) and David Long (Creative and Liberal Arts) will introduce the kinds of courses they regularly staff, what they look for in applicants, the general nature of teaching at community college, and how the hiring process works across fall, spring, and summer.
We’ll cover minimum qualifications (including the “18 graduate credit hours” rule), typical time commitment and pay for one course, and the different kinds of teaching roles (for example, instructor of record vs. lab leader). We’ll also briefly note how these opportunities can connect with the Certificate in College Teaching (CCT), and that there are established pathways for some international PhD students and postdocs to teach at Durham Tech.
