Crafting Compelling Science Stories through Podcasts and Short-Form Video

Speaker

Zakiya Whatley, PhD'14, Co-Host and Executive Producer, Dope Labs Podcast

Are you a graduate student ready to bring your research to life through engaging audio and video content? This hands-on workshop introduces you to the essentials of science communication using two powerful mediums: podcasts and short-form video.

You’ll dive into the art and science of storytelling, discovering how to make complex topics accessible and engaging. Working with professional-grade audio and video equipment, you’ll create and edit your own content—recording a quick introduction to your research or discussing its real-world impact. Each participant will leave with a polished audio and video clip to kickstart their science communication portfolio.

What You’ll Gain:

  • Recording and Editing Skills: Learn essential techniques for audio and video production, from mic placement to framing, that set your content apart.
  • Practical Tools: Get hands-on experience with Descript, CapCut, and other tools that streamline editing, regardless of your experience level.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Audio Station: Record a professional-quality audio introduction, practice editing, and refine your delivery with personalized guidance.
  • Video Station: Capture a short video about your research interests, utilizing dual camera angles for a more dynamic presentation.
  • Peer Feedback: Share your work with peers and receive constructive feedback to elevate your message.

Whether you’re looking to connect with a broader audience, explore new career opportunities, or simply expand your communication skills, this workshop offers the foundational tools to communicate your research effectively through podcasts and short-form video.
