The Duke Graduate School is seeking a communications intern for the Spring 2025 semester, with the potential to extend the internship into the summer. The internship is an opportunity for a student to develop skills, get feedback, work collaboratively, build a portfolio, and gain valuable experience in the communications operations of a university unit with 3,500 students and 35,000 alumni.
Position Details:
- The position pays $18 per hour.
- The intern will work roughly 10-15 hours a week with a fully remote, flexible schedule.
- The internship will start as soon as possible in the spring semester, and end in May 2025 (start and end dates can be adjusted based on your schedule).
- The internship may optionally be extended into the summer, ending August 31, 2025, if the intern has been successful in their role.
Work Location and Arrangement
The intern can work remotely, but must be based in North Carolina in accordance with Duke HR regulations. An intern working remotely will have at least one Zoom check-in per week with the supervisor, and frequent interactions via email, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom as needed while working on projects. If the intern wishes to gain some in-person experience, there will be opportunities to do so as well (COVID conditions and restrictions permitting).
Responsibilities
The intern will be supervised by the school’s Associate Dean of Communications and Marketing. Writing is a key part of the position, but part of the job can be tailored to your skills and interests. For example, you might:
- Write and edit news releases, feature stories, and other content for the school’s platforms
- Design graphics for digital and print
- Help devise communication strategies for programs and events
- Assist with photo and video shoots (if working onsite) and editing
- Help develop and update content for Graduate School websites, newsletters, and social media

Qualifications
You should:
- Be currently pursuing a degree in journalism, marketing, public relations, or communications at a university other than Duke
- Have completed at least one course in newswriting or news editing
- Be familiar with social media platforms
- Know how to use Microsoft Office
- Have an interest in communications and want to learn more
- Be curious and willing to experiment with new ways of doing things
COVID Vaccination Requirement
All Duke University students, faculty and staff must submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination or have an approved medical or religious exemption. This applies even if an individual is working remotely.
