Application Deadlines

For all dates listed, the deadline is 11:59:59 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

If there is a discrepancy between the deadline information on this page and other materials you may have received, you should adhere to the deadlines on this page.

Some programs will continue to accept applications after the deadline, if spaces are available. If you are interested in applying after the deadline, contact your department or program of interest to determine their policy on accepting late applications.

Important information for applicants from regions affected by natural disasters

Fall semester

Fall semester application deadlines vary by department.

Spring semester

October 1: Deadline to submit all Ph.D. and master’s applications for the spring semester, space permitting.

Note: Very few departments accept new students for the spring term. To determine which ones do, go to the Programs and Degrees section of the website, click on the appropriate program link, and read the notes under General Information. Keep in mind that financial assistance is not always readily available for students who start in the spring.

Summer session

Very few departments accept new students for the summer session. With the exception of applicants to the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program (which begins in the summer), applicants who wish to apply for summer admission must obtain special permission from the department of interest and The Graduate School. Summer session applicants should adhere to the fall application deadlines.

If you missed the deadline

While some departments will consider applications that arrive after the deadlines, others will not. Also, enrollment in many departments fills up soon after the deadlines. The earlier The Graduate School receives your materials, the better your chances are for full consideration.

Note to Applicants from Regions Affected by Natural Disasters

Our thoughts are with prospective applicants who are dealing with the devastating impact of recent natural disasters in the southern United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the Caribbean. We realize that some applicants living in these regions are facing tremendous technical difficulties as they work to complete their graduate school applications.

If you are concerned about recommendation letters, school documents, or GRE scores arriving late due to technical infrastructure issues, please upload a statement to the Additional Information section of your application explaining the potential delay. The Graduate School will review your statement and let you know which application materials will be accepted after the application deadline.

If you need additional assistance, do not hesitate to contact the graduate admissions office at grad-admissions@duke.edu or 919-684-5737.
