Program Description

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies involves faculty and students from the arts and sciences disciplines as well as the professional schools.  We offer a Latin American and Caribbean Studies Certificate open to students in all A.M. and Ph.D. programs.  Certificate requirements include:  six courses related to Latin America and/or the Caribbean; language proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, French, or less commonly taught regional languages; and an approved thesis/dissertation focused on Latin America or the Caribbean.  The Center provides support for conference travel, summer research, and graduate student initiatives such as a speakers series and conferences.

The Center is part of the Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University, which provides opportunities for collaboration between the faculty and students of the two institutions. Consortium activities include: interdisciplinary working groups, a summer Yucatec Maya program, an annual film festival, a speakers series, conferences, and publication opportunities. As a National Resource Center for Latin American Studies, the Consortium provides funding for summer and academic year Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships.
