Other EIS Services

In addition to administering the English placement exams and offering courses, The Graduate School supports other services for international graduate and professional students whose first language is not English.

EIS 1-on-1 Language-Focused Writing Consultations

One-on-one sessions focusing on sentence-level language issues (e.g., grammar, word choice, punctuation).

Students should come to each session with a specific writing assignment as well as a list of aspects of language they wish to work on. The goals of the sessions are to help students identify their individual language issues and to develop and apply self-editing strategies. The consultations are not an EIS editing service, but students can expect to improve specific language issues in their writing with the consultant’s guidance.

Sessions last 45 minutes. Contact Brad Teague at brad.teague@duke.edu to make an appointment.

EIS 1-on-1 Speaking Consultations

Individual appointments focusing on course presentations, conference talks, oral exams, and interviews. Students should come to each session with a specific speaking task as well as a list of aspects of language they wish to work on. Students may receive feedback on pronunciation, word choice, grammar, and presentation skills.

Sessions last 45 minutes. Contact Brad Teague at brad.teague@duke.edu to make an appointment.

EIS Summer Grammar Workshop Series

In summer 2019, EIS will hold a series of workshops to help students practice grammar in a low-stakes, supportive, and relaxed environment. The workshops will be held in Link Classroom 2 in Perkins Library on Tuesdays (10:00-11:30 a.m) and Thursdays (1:00-2:30 p.m.) from May 14 to June 13. You can come to as many or as few of the sessions as you want. Contact Christian Gomez (christian.d.gomez@duke.edu) for more information about the schedule and sign-up.
