In addition to administering the English placement exams and offering courses, The Graduate School supports three other services for international graduate students whose first language is not English.
Individual appointments with an experienced consultant to improve the content and organization of writing. For an appointment, visit http://twp.duke.edu/twp-writing-studio.
In summer 2018, EIS is piloting one-on-one writing consultation sessions that focus on sentence-level language issues (e.g., grammar, word choice, punctuation) as an added level of support for non-native writers.
Students should come to each session with a specific writing assignment, as well as a list of specific aspects of language they wish to work on. The goals of the sessions are to help students identify their individual language issues and to develop and apply self-editing strategies. The consultations are not an EIS editing service, but students can expect to improve specific language issues in their writing with the consultant’s guidance.
Sessions last 45 minutes and can be scheduled from May 15 through June 29, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Contact Brad Teague at firstname.lastname@example.org to make an appointment.
Students in Duke Graduate School programs can make individual appointments with an experienced instructor to rehearse course presentations, conference talks, oral exams, and interviews. Students receive feedback on pronunciation, word choice, grammar, and presentation skills.
Appointments are held during the day on weekdays in or near Perkins Library. Students should request appointments as far in advance as possible.
Note: Speaking consultation sessions will resume in fall 2018.
