Information Session: Career Community - Government, NGOs, and Nonprofit Focus

Tuesday, August 4, 2020
2:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Are you exploring career options in government, nonprofit, and NGOs? Find the support of graduate student and postdoc colleagues with similar interests as well as structured resources through a Career Community. Learn how to maximize your use of sites like LinkedIn, discover the best career research tools Duke offers, strengthen your communication skills, and make contacts who can help you succeed as a candidate. Join this information session to learn about the new Career Community initiative, with a focus on jobs in government, NGOs, and nonprofit. A Zoom link will be sent to registrants.

More about the Career Community: Between the kickoff meeting on September 1 (at 2:00 pm) and final session October 27 (at 2:00 pm), you commit to hold four biweekly meetings with members of your career community to share information and build accountability for your progress. We anticipate groups of 3-5 participants. Your group will undertake one of the following activities to build your skills and network:

    • Organize 2 public virtual events featuring guest speakers
    • Conduct 3 informational interviews and write them up to be shared online
    • Hold a skill development workshop with a guest speaker (either Duke or non-Duke) open to the graduate student and postdoc community
    • Organize a virtual site visit to an employer in the government, nonprofit, or NGO sector
    • Organize a virtual networking event
    • Write a blog post for the Career Center blog
    • Create a podcast episode for the Career Center

Groups will be formed at the kickoff meeting, depending on the number of successful applicants and their sectors of interest. Applications are due Monday, August 17 by 11:59 pm ET.

This pilot Career Community is co-sponsored by The Graduate School, Duke Career Center, and the Office of Postdoctoral Services. Questions? Contact Dr. Melissa Bostrom, Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Professional Development, at melissa.bostrom@duke.edu.
