Alum Zoom: 5 Career Questions with a Duke Ph.D.

Wednesday, September 2, 2020
1:00 pm to 1:30 pm

Erin Parish, Ph.D.Please join us for a series of short, focused career conversations with former Duke PhD students and postdocs. On September 2, our guest is Erin Parish, Ph.D. '15 (Cultural Anthropology), Design Strategist for the City of Durham. The City of Durham is home to an innovation team – known as the “i-team” – that deploys a range of strategies, including quantitative and qualitative research and design-based innovation, to bring greater clarity and new solutions to the city’s most pressing problems.  Innovation team designers believe in the power of cities–and city government–to dramatically improve people’s lives. They are uniquely positioned to bring human-centered design into policy-making.  The team’s multi-disciplinary approach leverages skills and tools from design thinking, behavioral science, and analytics to help tackle hard-to-solve public challenges.

5 Questions:
1.  Can you tell us about your background?
2.  How did you get your job?
3.  What's a typical day like at your organization (pre- and post-COVID)?
4.  What can postdocs and students who would like to work in this field (or explore it further) do to prepare?
5.  What is the employment outlook for this field, given the COVID crisis? (please note that the answer to this question may be "we don't know yet")

A link with Zoom meeting details will be sent to confirmed registrants. The Alum Zoom Series is sponsored by The Graduate School and the Duke Office of Postdoctoral Services. Questions? Contact Dr. Melissa Bostrom, Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Professional Development, at
