ELI Program Sessions, Spring 2020
All sessions take place on Fridays from 12:30-4:30 p.m. in the Libraries on West Campus. Required dates for the 2020 session are January 31, February 7, February 14, February 21, and March 20. The January 24 workshop and February 28 work session are optional.
In addition to attending all portions of each session, participants commit up to 5 hours per week of work outside the sessions for completion of assessments and the team project. Note that in addition to the five formal session meetings, participants have two intersession assignments to complete during the break between sessions 4 and 5.
Participants must be on-site for all sessions; remote participation is not possible for the 2020 program.
Pre-Program Workshop with the 2020 Cohort and ELI alumni
OPTIONAL: Improv Your Leadership: Enhancing communication while overcoming the unexpected
January 24, 2020, 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Becoming a confident and competent leader requires working through unexpected moments and helping others be the best that they can be. This session uses improv as a vehicle for learning leadership concepts and communication skills. Alumni of the ELI program are invited to participate along with the incoming 2020 cohort. More information will be provided to accepted applicants.
Session 1: An Introduction to the Emerging Leaders Institute
January 31, 2020, 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
This session will provide an overview of the program, introduce the critical thinking model at the heart of the program, and begin the program-long team projects.
Session 2: Leveraging Strengths and COMMUNICATING IN TEAMS
February 7, 2020, 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
In this session, we’ll use tools to help you describe your strengths to others and help your team communicate effectively.
Session 3: ARTICULATING YOUR VALUE AND Leading Beyond Yourself
February 14, 2020, 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
How can you apply your insights about yourself as an individual and as a team member to articulate your value? What are the next steps you can take to lead beyond your team?
Session 4: Emotional Intelligence and Strategic Communication
February 21, 2020, 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
This session will help you better understand emotional intelligence so you can continue to develop this essential tool for leadership, while offering strategies for effective communication in writing and team presentations.
OPTIONAL TEAM WORK TIME
February 28, 2020, 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
This session provides an optional team work time and opportunity to consult with the program director about the team project.
All participants are required to complete two assignments during this period:
- Schedule and complete a 45-minute individual coaching session with your assigned coach at a mutually convenient time.
- Schedule a 30-minute in-person team meeting with Dr. Bostrom, including all team members. An additional team meeting may be required before the final session.
FINAL SESSION: Team Presentations and Graduation
March 20, 2020, 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm
The program wraps up with final team presentations of the program-long projects, a reflection on the team experience, a plan for future professional development goals, and a “graduation” ceremony.
