Duke Graduate School

Through the generosity of the Aleane Webb Endowment, The Graduate School provides small grants for dissertation research projects. This award was created to help graduate students fund miscellaneous projects associated with their research.

Created through an endowment gift from the family of Anne T. and Robert M. Bass, the Bass Instructional Fellowship Program supports high-quality teaching experiences for Ph.D. students where normal means of funding are unavailable.

In recognition of the significant disruption that the coronavirus pandemic has caused in the academic and research progress of many Ph.D. students, Duke is providing a mechanism for those students to apply for the following extensions to their standard funding package.

This award is offered through The Graduate School. Incoming students are nominated by their department; no direct application is necessary. The Chancellor’s Scholarship is awarded to incoming graduate students studying biomedical sciences in the School of Medicine.

The Graduate School provides up to $525 for domestic and $700 for international travel for advanced students who have passed all parts of the preliminary examination and are presenting a paper or poster at a regional, national, or international conference. Due to current travel restrictions, The Graduate School will not award conference travel awards related to actual travel at this time until further notice, but will award funds to cover web-based conference registration expenses. The same guidelines regarding the expense and application process should be followed.

The Dean’s Graduate Fellowships are four-year awards provided to students who—by reason of their background, culture, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, work, and life experiences—contribute to a fuller representation of perspectives within the academic life of the University. This award is offered through The Graduate School. Incoming students are nominated by their department; no direct application is necessary. 

The Dean’s Research Award for Master’s Students will provide up to $1,000 to fund the purchase of materials and supplies to support research relevant to a master’s student’s degree completion. This award cannot be used to fund travel.

The Dissertation Research Travel Award from The Graduate School provides funding for Ph.D. students to travel within the United States in order to conduct pre-dissertation or dissertation research.
