Mental Health First Aid Training & Certification

The Graduate School has partnered with Duke Fuqua School of Business to offer Mental Health First Aid Training to DGSs and DGSAs.

Sponsored by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, Mental Health First Aid courses use an interactive approach to teach how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health crisis.

Becoming a mental health first aider allows you to be prepared for crises and help those in need.

During the full day workshop, you will learn how to apply the Mental Health First Aid action plan in a variety of situations, including when someone is experiencing:

  • Panic attacks
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • Nonsuicidal self-injury
  • Acute psychosis (e.g., hallucinations or delusions)
  • Overdose or withdrawal from alcohol or drug use
  • Reaction to a traumatic event

The opportunity to practice—through role plays, scenarios, and activities—makes it easier to apply these skills in a real-life situation.

The Graduate School will cover the cost of the workshop, including lunch and parking, for DGSs and DGSAs who wish to attend.

Registration and Pre-Couse Work

If you are a DGS or DGSA interested in registering for the workshop, provide your contact information on this sign up sheet by Wednesday, April 9.

Because this is an interactive workshop, we can only accommodate 30 participants at this time. Please add your name to the waitlist if the course is full, and we will contact you if an additional spot is available.

Upon completing the course, you will be certified as a "Mental Health First Aider." Part of this certification requires two hours of pre-course work, which will be shared with you after you register. The coursework must be completed by April 21, prior to the April 23 in-person workshop.
