Applying for Faculty Positions at Liberal Arts Colleges

This panel, sponsored by the Certificate in College Teaching, brings together senior faculty and academic leaders from teaching-focused liberal arts colleges to talk candidly about applying for faculty positions at liberal arts institutions. The conversation is designed for PhD students and postdocs who are exploring careers centered on undergraduate teaching, mentoring, and broad faculty roles. Panelists include :

Angela Lewellyn, PhD
Assistant Provost for Academic Excellence and Integrity and Associate Professor of Social Justice
Elon University

Michele Malotky, PhD
Professor of Biology
Guilford College

Drawing on their experience as faculty members and academic leaders, they will discuss what liberal arts colleges typically look for in applicants, how hiring processes differ from research-intensive universities, and how candidates can make their teaching, research, and service experiences legible to liberal arts search committees.

The panel will also address questions about institutional fit, balancing teaching and scholarship, and navigating the transition from doctoral or postdoctoral training into a liberal arts context.
