Student Group Profile: Women in the Social Sciences & Humanities (WiSH)
This year, the Office of Graduate Student Affairs (GSA) initiated WiSH as a support network for women graduate students in the social sciences and humanities at Duke. The group hosts events every two months in which women faculty members and students in these disciplines can come together and share common concerns and experiences.
The group’s first event—entitled “Graduate School: A Gendered Environment”—featured an informal roundtable discussion with Ada Gregory and Sheila Broderick from the Duke Women’s Center. The group discussed how gender impacts the Duke experience, as well as issues of social and academic integration. The event presented an opportunity to address issues of negative gender bias and sexual harassment. Attendees also shared their experiences with mentoring, departmental environments, research, and classroom teaching.
