Additional Savings on Graduate Student Parking

The following message was sent to all Duke Graduate School students on January 11, 2023.

Dear Graduate School students,

Based on the collaborative work of university and graduate student representatives this past summer and fall, Duke has been taking steps to lower parking costs. Back in the fall, the university reduced graduate student parking rates to $438. Since then, Duke has continued to work on parking affordability, and I’m delighted to share a significant upcoming change that will benefit graduate students.

For the current academic year (2022-2023), the annual parking permit rate for graduate and professional students will be further reduced. The new rate will be $258, a 41% reduction from the current rate of $438. A $180 credit will be posted to student permit holders’ bursar accounts in February 2023.

I am grateful to university leaders and our colleagues in Parking and Transportation for taking this significant action, which will provide substantial savings for our students. This change was also directly informed by the report and recommendations developed earlier this year by a task force of representatives from The Graduate School, the Graduate and Professional Student Government, and the schools that house Ph.D. programs. I want to thank the task force members for their work and advocacy, which have also resulted in a significant Ph.D. stipend increase as well as a number of additional financial resources and cost savings for graduate students.

If you have any questions about these changes or parking in general, please contact the Parking and Transportation office (919-684-7275, tranpark@duke.edu).

Sincerely,

Suzanne Barbour
Dean of The Graduate School
Vice Provost for Graduate Education
