The Graduate School held its Ph.D. hooding ceremony on May 9 at the Durham Convention Center, where 236 Ph.D. students received their diplomas and celebrated with families and friends.

Noted oceanographer and explorer Sylvia A. Earle (M.S.’56, Ph.D.’66) received the Distinguished Alumni Award during the ceremony. Earle, a passionate advocate for ocean conservation, addressed the graduates and encouraged them to make the most of living in a time when they have access to an unprecedented amount of knowledge and are in position to drastically shape the future of the planet (video of her speech).

"This moment in time, as never before, and maybe as never again, is the sweet spot," she said.

Here is a look back at The Graduate School's commencement weekend in numbers, pictures, video, and tweets.
