Teaching IDEAS Series

Instructional Development for Excellence And Success: this annual workshop series is open to Duke faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students. Invited speakers in this series will draw upon their experience to address topics relevant to classroom teaching, dealing with students, or faculty life and career paths. By participating, you will learn how to:

  • Recognize the complex dimensions of classroom teaching & faculty life
  • Analyze difficult teaching situations and respond creatively
  • Improve your teaching skills by drawing upon various resources at Duke
  • Plan and design courses with the student perspective in mind
  • Engage in scholarly conversations about college teaching and learning

Teaching Triangles: Peer Teaching Observation

This program is for graduate student instructors who are teaching or TAing a class and would like to participate in peer teaching observation and feedback. This is an opportunity to observe and learn from each other's teaching. Completetion of Teaching Triangles during a semester in which you are an instructor or TA can fulfill the teaching & observation requirement of the Certificate in College Teaching.

 

A Teaching Triangle consists of three instructors who:

  • Complete a training orientation in peer teaching observation practices (Teaching Triangles Orientation)
  • Observe at least one class taught by each triangle partner (a total of 2 observations)
  • Reflect on the class observation experience
  • Share observations & reflections with partners
  • Share observation experience with participants as a whole group (Final Meeting)

The steps listed above are spread over a single semester and completed well before finals begin. Participating in Teaching Triangles is not a time-intenstive committment and should not have a negative effect on your research, dissertation or time to graduation. To participate, please register for a Teaching Triangles orientation session offered at the beginning of a semester in which you will teach or TA.
