Career & Professional Development

Teaching Mini-grants Program

Each year, the Graduate School awards a small number of Teaching Mini-grants to actively enrolled Ph.D. students who develop projects or resources that foster the professional development of other graduate students as effective classroom instructors or teaching assistants. These projects or resources generally address departmental concerns and interests, and we require at least one faculty advisor from the department or program. Former projects are described in the Archives below and have included instructional technology resources (Blackboard sites, CDs) of teaching reference materials, model courses, and laboratory teaching manuals that address pedagogical concerns. Recent projects have included the following:

  • Mathematics - created a dynamic, indexed electronic database of teaching materials for all introductory, undergraduate math courses
  • Nursing- designed an online orientation module for graduate nursing students to develop information competencies in order to use Duke's Geriatric Learning Objects Repository with effectiveness
  • Music- developed a series of workshops and resources to demonstrate how to teach music studies as cultural studies in order to foster stronger analytical essays from undergraduates

Each Spring, the Graduate School offers an Information Session to interested graduate students during which we outline the criteria and share the results of currently funded projects.
