How to Identify and Leverage Your Transferable Skills - Dara Wilson-Grant
Bryan Center, Von Canon B, Lower Level
A common question asked by graduate students and postdocs preparing to compete in the non-academic job market is, "How do I prove that I am qualified even though I do not have direct industry experience?" The key is learning how to translate your graduate education and postdoctoral training into a language that broad audiences understand-skills (transferable and technical).
Please register here.

An electronic web-based teaching portfolio is far more practical, portable and more easily kept current than a paper binder.

The Art of Networking -- Joy Javits and Dara Wilson-Grant
Bryan Student Center, Von Canons B and C, Lower Level
Networking is one of the most effective approaches to getting your career on the fast track. Yet, for a variety of reasons (e.g., shyness, negative perceptions), most of us fail to make networking an active part of our ongoing professional development. A Career Counselor and a Communication Coach will share thoughts about Networking and its value to you in your professional search for satisfying work and for inspiring connections with colleagues. This workshop is highly interactive and will include a fun (and hopefully) low pressure "mocktail" session with your peers.

Tim's results are due in the morning for an NIH grant proposal, his experiments have gone haywire, and he has to figure out how to handle it. Soo Jung has a take home final due for her Theoretical Foundations class, the deadline is looming, and she is cutting and pasting sections from academic articles into her main document to pull from later. Their friend Courtney is concerned for both of them, wants to help, but has her own stack of papers to grade for her assistantship. What choices will they make? And can you in the audience help them?
