Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. Q: Do faculty members who are attending and hooding a graduate student need a ticket?
    A:
No, faculty members do not need a physical ticket for the Hooding Ceremony. As long as we know you are attending, we will include you in the faculty count - you will be easily identified by the academic apparel.
  2. Q: What name will be on my diploma?
A: When you applied to graduate you were asked to enter a "degree name."  The degree name is sent to the Office of Special Events and University Ceremonies where the diplomas are ordered.  The name appears on the diploma exactly as the student entered it on-line.  Students should make sure that if they have a middle initial and wish for a period to be after the middle initial they enter that punctuation during the application for graduation process.
  3. Q: How do I get my cap, gown & hood?
    A:
For the Ph.D. Hooding Ceremony and the Wallace Wade Ceremony, university graduation caps, gowns & hoods are rented through the Bryan Center Bookstore (there is a fee to rent apparel). You need to place your apparel order before March 21.  The caps, gowns & hoods are to be picked up by you and returned immediately after the Wallace Wade Ceremony. (You can keep your tassels.) You can find more information at: www.duke.edu/commencement
  4. Q: Where do I get my Announcements and Invitations?
A: You may order personalized graduation announcements through Jostens. Generic announcements will be available at Duke Stores mid-March.
  5. Q: I want to attend the Hooding Event in May, how do I get a ticket(s)?
    A:
The Graduate School will be sending a survey to eligible candidates late February. In the survey you will be able to indicate the number of tickets you would like to reserve and find information regarding ticket pick-up/delivery. (Typically mid-April).
  6. Q: How many tickets can I get?
    A:
You can reserve up to 3 tickets. (Please note: the graduating student and advisor do not need tickets, so they are not included in this number). It is possible that additional tickets will be available, depending on the number of graduates, but the final number of tickets available to allocate will not be known until closer to the event.
  7. Q: How long is the Hooding Event?
    A:
The Hooding Ceremony itself is approximately 2 hours, give or take, depending on how many graduates there are. A reception will follow the ceremony.
  8. Q: I am an International student and need documentation for my family to attend from outside of the U.S.
    A:
Visa Services handles such requests: http://www.visaservices.duke.edu/forms/ConfirmationOfStatusForm.pdf
