Competitive Fellowships for Advanced Students
Summer Research Fellowships
Summer research fellowships are available to students in the Humanities and Social Sciences in the summer following years 3-6 who have passed their preliminary exam. The fellowships pay a summer stipend of $5,000 in addition to summer tuition and fees.

Katherine Goodman Stern Fellowship
The Stern Fellowship provides to students in their final year of dissertation research an annual stipend (equivalent to the Graduate School minimum stipend established each year), as well as tuition, health, and recreation fees. In addition, the Graduate School will pay the health insurance premium for recipients who enroll in the Duke student medical insurance plan.

Evan Frankel Fellowship for Students in the Humanities
The Frankel fellowship will be awarded to advanced students in the write-up stage of their dissertation to doctoral students in the humanities. This support provides an annual stipend (equivalent to the Graduate School minimum stipend established each year), as well as tuition, health and recreation fees. In addition, the Graduate School will pay the health insurance premium for recipients who enroll in the Duke student medical insurance plan.

Aleane Webb Dissertation Research Fellowships
The Aleane Webb Fellowship provides small grants for dissertation research projects. This fund was created to assist graduate students in funding miscellaneous projects associated with research. Eligible projects include the purchase of microfilm, photographic development of slides, and graphic reproduction. Travel and typing costs will not be considered for this award. Phillip Jackson Baugh Fellowship for Graduate Students in Anthropology, Economics, Psychology, Sociology interested in Aging and Human Development
This one-year fellowship is for the promotion of careers and interest in the areas of aging and human development. The Baugh Fellowship provides an annual stipend (equivalent to the Graduate School minimum stipend established each year), as well as tuition, health and recreation fees. In addition, the Graduate School will pay the health insurance premium for recipients who enroll in the Duke student medical insurance plan.

E. Bayard Halsted Scholarship for Duke Graduates studying Science, History or Journalism
Recipients of this award must be graduate students who earned their undergraduate degree from any department at Duke University and who are, or shall be at the time of receipt of this scholarship, pursuing advanced studies at Duke University in the areas of Science, History, or Journalism. The Halsted Scholarship provides an annual stipend (equivalent to the Graduate School minimum stipend established each year), as well as tuition, health and recreation fees. In addition, the Graduate School will pay the health insurance premium for recipients who enroll in the Duke student medical insurance plan.

Myra and William Waldo Boone Fellowship for Canadian Graduate Students
The Graduate School is offering one or two competitive fellowships through the generosity of the Myra and William Waldo Boone Endowment for the 2009-10 academic year for Canadian students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, or for students in Canadian Graduate Study. This support provides an annual stipend (equivalent to the Graduate School minimum stipend established each year), as well as tuition, health and recreation fees. In addition, the Graduate School will pay the health insurance premium for recipients who enroll in the Duke student medical insurance plan.

Julian Price Graduate Fellowship in Humanities/History
The Price Fellowship provides to students in the Humanities and History an annual stipend (equivalent to the Graduate School minimum stipend established each year), as well as tuition, health and recreation fees. In addition, the Graduate School will pay the health insurance premium for recipients who enroll in the Duke student medical insurance plan.. Each recipient will also receive a $5,000 award to be used exclusively to cover expenditures for research. These expenditures can include travel for research purposes or attendance at conferences, and/or purchase of supplies or equipment necessary to the research project.

Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Fellowship for Undergraduate Instruction
The Bass Undergraduate Instructional Program is an endowment to support the Graduate School’s mission to train the educators and professionals of the future. This award, funded by the generosity of Anne T. and Robert M. Bass, provides an annual stipend (equivalent to the Graduate School minimum stipend established each year), as well as tuition, health and recreation fees. In addition, the Graduate School will pay the health insurance premium for recipients who enroll in the Duke student medical insurance plan. Each recipient will also receive a $5,000 stipend supplement.

Library Internships
Four Special Collections Library internships (Reference Intern, Archival Processing Intern, Advertising History Intern, and African American Studies Intern) are made available by the Graduate School and the Perkins Library. These are 9-month internships that each provide a stipend (equivalent to the Graduate School minimum stipend established each year), as well as tuition, health and recreation fees. In addition, the Graduate School will pay the health insurance premium for recipients who enroll in the Duke student medical insurance plan.

Pre-Dissertation and Dissertation Research Travel Award
The Graduate School Pre-dissertation and Dissertation Research Travel Awards provide funding for Ph.D. students to travel outside the continental United States. Award amounts vary from $500 to $3,000 depending on the research project and the number of proposals funded (the average award for the 2008-09 academic year was approximately $2,650). Funding generally includes travel costs, some living expenses, and direct research expenses. All students enrolled full-time in a graduate school program at Duke are eligible.

International Research Travel Fellowship for Advanced Students
The International Fellowship provides an annual stipend (equivalent to the Graduate School minimum stipend established each year), as well as tuition, health and recreation fees. In addition, the Graduate School will pay the health insurance premium for recipients who enroll in the Duke student medical insurance plan.
