Cost of Attendance
Tuition and FeesThe following figures are for 2009-10.
TuitionTuition is charged on a per semester basis for Ph.D. students, and on a per unit basis for master's and non-degree students.
For new Ph.D. students entering in 2009-10, the charge for tuition is $18,820 per semester. A charge for tuition is levied for six semesters of graduate study. One semester of credit may be granted for those entering with a previous graduate degree or for non-degree work done at Duke prior to matriculation.
For master's and non-degree students, the tuition for 2009-10 is $1,080 per unit or semester hour.
Registration FeeBeginning in August, 2009, all master's students, with the exception of students registered through Continuing Education or the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program, will be charged a registration fee for every semester of residence. For 2009-10, the registration fee charge is $2,650 per semester. (Registration for summer 2009 is $2,545 for both masters and Ph.D. students.)
Transcript FeeAll entering students will be charged in the fall semester a one-time mandatory fee of $40 for transcripts. This fee entitles the student to an unlimited number of Duke transcripts.
Student Health FeeAll full-time students and part-time degree candidates are assessed a fee each semester for the use of the Student Health Service. For fall and spring, the fee is $580 ($290 each semester). The Student Health Service fee for summer 2009 is $186. This fee is distinct from health insurance, and does not provide major medical coverage.
Health InsuranceStudents will be charged for health insurance in the fall semester, unless proof of other health insurance is provided. For 2009-10, the Student Health Insurance is estimated to be $1,750 for the full year. Information on the coverage provided by this insurance is available from the Office of the Bursar. Student Government DuesAll graduate students will be charged student government dues of $16.25 per semester. See GPSC for more information.
Recreation FeeAll graduate students will be charged a recreation fee for the use of on-campus facilities. The fee is $34 per semester.
Thesis or DissertationFees incurred in connection with a thesis or dissertation are currently as follows:

Auditors are permitted on a space-available basis with the consent of the instructor. Students registered full time during fall and spring may audit courses without charge.

Cost of Living
Following is the estimated 2009-10 academic year cost of living allowances for students applying for federal financial aid: $6,165 Room, $4,140 Board, $5,130 Transportation and Miscellaneous Expense, $1,750 Insurance, and $1,200 Books.
