Admissions

Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required in support of your application to the Graduate School. The letters must be submitted electronically via the online application.  You will be required to enter the contact information of your recommenders (including email address), and the recommenders will, in turn, be sent a link from which they access the online recommendation form and be given the opportunity to upload a letter in support of your application. Please request letters of recommendation from persons best qualified to testify to your capacity for graduate work. It is always our preference to have academic references representing your major field, though we recognize that there are situations where this may not be possible. In such circumstances, we encourage students to seek out those persons who can comment on qualities that will be relevant to academic pursuits, particularly research.

If one or more of your recommendation providers are unable or unwilling to submit their letter electronically, you may ask them to submit a paper letter via post.  Please fill out the top portion of this .pdf cover sheet before distributing to your recommenders.  Your recommendation providers must complete the cover sheet, attach a signed letter of recommendation, seal both documents in a signed-across-the-seal envelope and mail directly to the Graduate School. You may send the letter from your recommender, provided that the envelope remains unopened and the letter of recommendation has not been viewed by you. Please note that the Graduate School strongly encourages all applicants to submit electronic letters of recommendation, and provides the option of paper submission for applicants whose letter providers are unable or unwilling to submit electronically.
